Net neutrality bill passes California Assembly; State Senate next then on to Gov. Brown (UPDATE)

After passing through the California State Assembly's Communications and Conveyance Committee earlier this month, the bill known as SB822 has passed the entire State Assembly. This bill will make net neutrality the law in California, preventing ISPs and wireless carriers from offering content providers a "fast lane" that they can pay to use. It also stops internet service providers and wireless operators from blocking or throttling content that they don't agree with.

UPDATE: SB822 passes the California State Assembly which means that it now goes to the Governor's desk ...

Android distribution numbers for August are in; Oreo gains 2.5 percentage points

The August Android distribution numbers are in, and any thoughts you had about Android 9.0 showing up in the results were strictly pie-in-the-sky on your part. Based on all of the Android devices that visited the Google Play Store over the last seven days, less than .1% of Android phones and tablets are running the latest and greatest build of Android.

Well, it seems that Android 7.0 Nougat is currently powering the most Android phones with a combined 30.8% share between Android 7.0 (10.5%) and Android 7.1 (20.3%). That is the same exact figure reported for Nougat ...

New Palm logo leaks

Earlier this month, a render showing Palm's new phone was leaked along with some of its specs. The device is actually being built by TCL as the Chinese manufacturer bought the rights to the Palm name, and has started a division called Palm Ventures Group. The last phone to wear the Palm name was the Palm Pre 2 (the Pre 3 was an HP model), and the new handset will not be powered by webOS. Instead, Android will be running the show.

If you read the earlier story about the phone, you might have seen the leaked image of the new phone with the new Palm logo on back. This ...

New mobile touchscreen device resembles an ancient scroll

A research team at Queen's University went back to the past in order to look to the future. The team created a prototype of a new type of connected mobile product. Not exactly a tablet, and not really a phone (although it can make calls), the MagicScroll is a cylinder with a flexible touchscreen that rolls out as needed. Think of those movies where a Knight on horseback opens up a scroll that contains the King's latest proclamation.

The MagicScroll features a 7.5-inch flexible touchscreen with a 2K resolution that is rolled out of a cylinder created by a 3D printer. Components, ...

Apple finds a defect in a "small percentage" of iPhone 8 logic boards, offers free repair

Apple today announced that it has discovered that a "small percentage" of iPhone 8 models contain logic boards with a manufacturing defect. If your unit has this defect, Apple says that it will repair your device for free. To determine if your model is eligible, click on the sourcelink found at the bottom of this article and punch in your handset's serial number where indicated. To find the serial number on your iPhone 8, go to Settings > General > About.

According to Apple, defective units are apt to experience random reboots, freeze up, or not boot up. If your ...

UI of Google's Pixel Stand leaks; no Pixel Watch this year

Last month, we told you that Google is planning on offering a Pixel Stand. This most likely would be a charging dock for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, both of which are expected to be introduced on October 9th (John Lennon's birthday, by the way). The dock will reportedly come with Google Assistant, and according to images of the UI discovered by app developer Kieron Quinn, the Pixel Stand will do quite a number of tasks even if the docked Pixel is locked.

So far, there have been no leaked images of the dock, which means that a wayward shipment of them have yet to reach ...

Motorola One and Motorola One Power hands-on: iPhone looks for a third of the price

Announced only hours ago at IFA 2018 in Berlin, the Motorola One and One Power are the company's latest mid-range Android devices. They're both made to offer decent specs at reasonable prices, but they also share the same flaw – neither of them is coming to the US.

So, what are we missing on exactly? The Motorola One carries a striking resemblance to the iPhone X, but at this point in time, it is far from the first phone to do so. A notch at the top of the display houses the front cam, the earpiece, and various sensors, while the chin at the bottom is thick enough ...

Samsung to launch two new Galaxy J Prime phones this fall

Samsung plans to launch two new budget-friendly Android smartphones in the coming months, improved versions of current models: Galaxy J4 and Galaxy J6. The main difference between the current and upcoming phones, besides their names, is the chipset inside.

While the Galaxy J4 and J6 come with Exynos chipsets, the Galaxy J4 Prime and J6 Prime are supposed to pack Snapdragon processors. Also, they will run a slightly newer version of Android out of the box.

It's true that they don't come with Android 9 Pie on board, but at least customers will get Android 8.1 Oreo instead of just standard ...

The Charge is the most popular fitness tracker that Fitbit makes and today, for the first time, we got to see its newest edition: the Charge 3, a sleek and stylish fitness tracker that you can wear at the gym or even pair up with a leather band and wear at office meetings.

From afar, the Charge 3 actually looks a lot like its predecessor, the Charge 2, but take a closer look and you will notice big improvements in the screen and responsiveness of the tracker. It's also very lightweight and very comfortable to wear for even longer periods of time, a huge advantage for a gadget ...

Sony Xperia XZ3 vs OnePlus 6: one is twice the price, so is it twice as good?

The OnePlus 6 may not be the best smartphone out there, but it is surely the top offering in its price category. Priced at $529, it delivers top specs, beautiful design, and fast, bloat-free software. The recently announced Sony Xperia XZ3 will cost 70% more – a cool $900 – when it is released in mid-October. But is it going to be 70% better than the OnePlus 6? And what makes these two high-end phones different, anyway?

Design

Just as every other high-end smartphone of today, the Sony Xperia XZ3 and the OnePlus 6 are made of glass and metal – ...

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are compatible with all major US carriers, FCC reveals

The FCC today revealed the existence of two unannounced Google phones that have to be the upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. The two devices are listed by the FCC with the model numbers G013A and G013C and are clearly labeled as "phones" made by Google. For reference, last year's Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have the model numbers G011A and G011C, respectively - there's definitely a pattern here.

While the FCC does not share too much information on the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL, it shows us that the handsets come with all the frequency bands necessary to work ...

Apple rolls out actual iOS 12 update to fix non-existent earlier beta release

Three new iPhones, two of which are practically confirmed to carry the somewhat confusing XS branding, an upgraded Apple Watch family, and redesigned iPad Pros will go official in less than two weeks, with the latest iOS version likely to be released just a few days later.

iOS 12 has been formally unveiled way back on June 4 with a declared focus on system stability and device performance, kicking off public beta tests close to the end of that month.

Right off the bat, the (unpolished) software update impressed developers and power users courageous enough to give the beta ...

Razer Phone price drops to $549 at Microsoft and Amazon

While Razer is reportedly readying the release of a brand new Android smartphone, the company's first handset - simply called Razer Phone - can now be purchased for only $549.99 ($150 off the regular price). This new price is currently available only at Microsoft and Amazon, not directly at Razer, which is still asking $699.99 for the device. Nevertheless, both Microsoft and Amazon are official resellers of the Razer Phone, so you're definitely getting US warranty with the handset.

The Razer Phone will be 1 year old in November, but it remains a high-end, powerful ...

Analysts say that regulatory approval for the T-Mobile-Sprint deal is now more likely

Despite recent comments and objections to the T-Mobile-Sprint merger from the Communication Workers of America (CWA) and others, analysts at Macquarie Research believe that the odds of the deal closing have improved. At the same time, a report sent to Macquaire's clients says that both companies might have to agree to certain conditions, or divest themselves of assets like spectrum and retail locations in order for the transaction to go through. Both the FCC and the FTC must sign off on the deal.

The founder of Sprint owned pre-paid provider Boost Mobile, Peter Adderton, ...

ZTE Axon 9 Pro hands-on: A very pleasant surprise

The other day, ZTE announced its comeback at IFA 2018 in Berlin, announcing that it has fully recovered from the aftereffects imposed by the US ban and is ready to boldly look ahead at the future.

To further show that it is ready to evolve as a company and a business entity, ZTE unraveled its brand new flagship device at the major trade show, the ZTE Axon 9 Pro, which feels like a step in the right direction, a device that ZTE really needed to add to its portfolio at this exact moment.

We had the pleasure of toying with the Axon 9 ...

Huawei Mate 20 lite hands-on preview: class, style and fun, but a few compromises too

Cavalier Maverick Speaker System hands-on: smart and beautiful rolled into one

You could pay through the roof to own any of the serious smart speakers on the market that make audio performance their priority, like the Apple HomePod or Google Home Max, but then you have to settle for something that’ll be staying stationary most of the time. And then there’s the Cavalier Maverick Speaker System, which is priced less than them and is portable as well!

When it comes to speaker designs, Cavalier’s approach is to offer something that’s authentic. By that, we mean the choice of materials that make up this portable speaker. There’s ...

U.S. jury finds Huawei infringed on 4G LTE patents; company fined $10.5 million

According to a publication focused on intellectual property, Huawei has been ordered to pay $10.5 million by a U.S. jury for infringing on 4G LTE patents. The damages will be paid to PanOptis, the company that took Huawei to court for illegally using five standard-essential patents without licensing them. Such patents are those that cover inventions that are essential to a particular product, in this case, 4G LTE handsets. As a result, these patents are supposed to be offered on terms that are fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND).

According to court filings, ...

Sony Xperia XZ3 is "not certified" with Verizon (but will work on T-Mobile and AT&T)

Sony's newest high-end smartphone, the Xperia XZ3, is among the best handsets announced at IFA 2018 this week. The new device will be available for pre-order in the US starting September 24, and should ship to buyers in October.

Like all Sony phones released in recent years, the Xperia XZ3 will be sold only unlocked stateside. But what carriers will it be compatible with? Most of Sony's latest smartphones work only on GSM/LTE operators like AT&T and T-Mobile, with the exceptions this year being the Xperia XZ2 Compact and Xperia XA2 - both officially certified for use on Verizon ...

Huawei's AI Cube is a smart speaker and internet router all in one; it is not a cube

This morning at IFA, Huawei unveiled its first smart speaker. Featuring virtual personal assistant Alexa, the Huawei AI Cube (which doesn't resemble a cube at all) looks similar to other smart speakers although it does have a secret inside; the device doubles as a an internet router. Thanks to Alexa, AI Cube owners will be able to use the product to control smart appliances, set timers and alarms, stream music, hear the news, get the latest sports scores and weather. The digital helper has many "skills" that can be helpful to those purchasing the AI Cube.

Samsung's Galaxy S9-compatible DeX Pad has never been as cheap as right now

We’ve all fantasized about that one device powerful, versatile, and productive enough to assume both smartphone and full-fledged PC responsibilities, with Samsung apparently working diligently towards that goal through gradual DeX upgrades.

Originally released with the Galaxy S8 and S8+ back in the spring of 2018, the company’s desktop experience interface can now be enabled by the Galaxy Note 9 without the need of a dedicated “Station” or “Pad”. All it takes is a USB-to-HDMI cable, and poof, the world’s best handset right now will turn into a big-screen computer... with the help of an ...

Apple Watch Series 4 will let you know if you need to apply sun screen before going out

Yesterday, we showed you a leaked image of the Series 4 Apple Watch that will reportedly be unveiled by Apple on September 12th. The larger edge-to-edge display has room for eight complications, including a new one seen in the lower left corner of the render. What appears to be a UV Index reading is seen, including a scale. The scale appears to be in line with the ones used by the WHO and the EPA.

With the UV Index reading available, those with the Series 4 Apple Watch will be able to know in advance, with a glance at their timepiece, whether they need to slather on ...

Huawei P20 and Mate 10 series shipments surpass 10 million units each

Back in June, Huawei revealed that its P20 and P20 Pro flagships had sold 6 million units since their launch back in March. But today, Huawei has confirmed that the lineup has hit yet another major milestone.

Taking just five months to do so, the Chinese company confirmed that it has now shipped over 10 million units of the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro. Huawei failed to disclose how the latest numbers compare to sales of last year’s P10 line but, following the sales update back in June, the figures were already up 81% when compared to sales of the previous-generation models. Additionally, it’s ...

Sony Xperia XZ3 vs Samsung Galaxy S9+: first look at design, specs and features

Some of you may know that Sony is a bit different from most smartphone manufacturers out there. It's different in that it likes to release a new flagship model every six months! Other companies – they usually do so once a year. And we often tend to say that as phone makers need to update their top products each and every year, it's difficult for them to deliver truly big innovations, and thus, we've gotten used to seeing iterative improvements at best. So where does that leave Sony and its six-month upgrade cycles?

Well, we guess it's safe to say that we've been paying less and ...

This Note 9 vs iPhone X machine drop test can break your heart, too

Samsung has a stake in Corning, the makers of the tough Gorilla Glass material that most modern flagships use to prevent them from shattering into pieces when they hit the ground. Thus, it's only logical that one of its famed phone lines - the Note phablets with S Pen stylus - is usually where every new generation of Gorilla Glass makes a cameo. Thus, when Corning invited us to observe their R&D factory process not long ago, we assumed that the newly-minted Gorilla Glass 6 we saw there will debut on the Note 9.

Corning, however, sent us a memo that the first ...

Huawei Mate 20 'series' announcement set for October 16 in London

And alongside the announcement of four snazzy P20 Pro models, the world’s second-largest handset vendor has just unveiled the official launch date of the Mate 20 “Series” at IFA Berlin.

The highly anticipated Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are scheduled to see daylight in London on October 16, although actual sales will probably kick off a little further down the line.

Obviously, US ...

Apple Watch Pride face doesn't seem to work in Russia, and not due to any bug

Apple may have recently ramped up its global efforts to support the LGBTQ community, but in countries where “gay propaganda” is prohibited by law, the Cupertino-based tech giant seems wary of making waves.

The so-called Apple Watch “Pride” face introduced with iOS 11.4 and watchOS 4.3.1 back in June does not appear to work in Russia regardless of the software version installed on your local wearable device and handset.

According to an experienced iOS developer and 9to5Mac “mystery solver”, that's because the feature is “hardcoded to not show up if the paired iPhone is using ...

YouTube will start collecting donations for nonprofit organizations

You can find anything on YouTube, including videos made by nonprofits to promote their campaigns. Now, YouTube has decided to give those organizations tools that will let you donate money to them while you’re looking at the sad puppy eyes that made you do it.

The features are part of the new “YouTube Giving” suite that the company is offering to some YouTube creators and qualifying US-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits. The suite includes the beta versions of Fundraisers, Community Fundraisers, Campaign matching and Super Chat for Good.

The features are pretty straightforward. Accounts ...

Samsung's patented smart ring will let you control devices by just waving your hand

Wearable technology is still a fledgeling niche, with manufacturers shuffling about, trying to find meaningful use scenarios for tech embedded in common accessories. Currently, the best product to come out of that are the smartwatches, and it's arguable that they are still pretty limited in what they can do. They are basically glorified fitness trackers that happen to vibrate when you get a notification.

Not that it's not cool. It's just not cool enough just yet.

A Samsung patent, published just last week, reveals that the company is fiddling with the idea of smart rings. These would ...

Are you using the TrueDepth camera kit on your iPhone X?

Above - the TrueDepth camera kit on the iPhone X. Below - the 3D-sensing face unlock setup on the Oppo Find X

Apple's Face ID tech on the iPhone X relies on four components - structured light transmitter and receiver, a front-facing camera, and a time of flight/proximity sensor. These sensors and cameras are all clustered in the "notch" at the top bezel. The structured light ones collect depth information which is combined with images taken with the front-facing camera to produce a 3D map of your face using software algorithms. Apple uses the TrueDepth setup for Animoji and Memoji, ...

Huawei announces Kirin 980: the world's first 7nm phone chip

Huawei is one of the few phone makers that makes its own chip and it now not only makes chips, it leads the industry with the introduction of the world's first 7nm mobile chip: welcome the new Kirin 980, a remarkable piece of silicon that combines power and artificial intelligence.

The Kirin 980 is the world first in a few areas: the world first made on a super precise 7nm manufacturing process, the world first to implement ARM's powerful new Cortex A76 CPU, the first with a dual NPU, the first with Mali's new G76 graphics chip, the first with a super fast 1.4Gbps ...

These trends will make 2019 the best phone year in a while, here's why

The ideal Frankenphone of 2019 will have truly all-screen front, dashing 5G chipset, and a multi-lens camera with 3D-mapping technology. It should bend like Gumby, too, like @PhoneDesigner's concept image of Samsung' foldable phone here

It might seem a bit premature to take a peek into the smartphone trends for 2019, but it is shaping up to be one of the most exciting ones ever. This current 2018, however, is frankly a year to forget when it comes to mobile innovations and grand ideas coming to fruition.

Awash in notch-y handsets, with everyone churning out ...

Best Buy offers $150 Galaxy S9/S9+ savings and a nice freebie with carrier activation

Samsung is obviously betting big on the universally praised Galaxy Note 9, which seems to have gotten off to a flying start at the box-office, despite certain analysts expecting the company’s market share numbers to continue dropping due at least in part to this new flagship.

But whether or not the Note 9 will strike gold, Samsung may also try its best to keep the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in the limelight for a while longer. No better way to do that than frequently discounting the two early 2018-released high-enders, as well as offering other deal sweeteners on top of actual savings.

ZTE delays its first 5G phone; will now launch in late 2019

ZTE Axon 7 Mini

In the hope of leading the switch over to 5G throughout the coming years, ZTE has been developing its own technology for quite some time now. This previously led the company to claim that it would be capable of releasing a 5G smartphone by the end of this year or early 2019 at the latest. Unfortunately for consumers, though, this launch has now been delayed significantly.

While no specific date is being provided, the Chinese company has stated that its first 5G smartphone will arrive in the second half of 2019. This falls ...

Honor Magic 2 teased with REAL Full View display and Magic Slide doohickey

The original Honor Magic was a very intriguing concept phone that was ahead of its time with quadruple display curves from all sides, and a harbinger of the AI buzzword baked in to demo the level of smart automation a phone can bring. Honor had no plans to launch it outside of China, where it sold for the equivalent of $530, but at the IFA expo the company teased a successor - Magic 2 - that will see a much wider release, or so they told us.

As you can see from our brief hands-on with the OG Magic below, it was a pretty unique phone for its time, ...

Apple Watch Series 1, not Series 3, ruled global smartwatch market during Q2 2018

Seeing Apple crush its rivals in yet another global smartwatch shipment report shouldn't surprise anyone with a minimal knowledge of wearable industry trends, but believe it or not, the latest report compiled by Counterpoint Research has the ancient Apple Watch Series 1 in the lead when it comes to the world’s best-selling models.

Powered by a dual-core S1 processor rather than the speedier W2 chip inside the newer Series 3, as well as lacking a standalone cellular connectivity option, the Series 1 is obviously more affordable while looking extremely similar on the outside as the latest ...

Google had a secret deal with Mastercard to link online ads with offline purchases

A big problem for companies who buy online ads is that they can't know for sure if and when ad interactions translate to real-life purchases. Not with a satisfactory degree of certainty, at least. Google apparently attempted to change this by striking a deal with Mastercard, leveraging the buying power of the company's close to two billion cardholders.

Reportedly, for the last year, Google has been tracking the offline buying habits of Mastercard holders with the intent to correlate them to interactions with ads online. Neither company publically announced the partnership or ...

Apple improves transparency about personal data usage with new rules for app developers

As users, we often “pay” for free apps and other digital goods with the information about our digital habits and preferences. Most often we know about it, but sometimes developers are not completely honest about the data their app is gathering and how it's being used. To solve that problem, Apple has prepared a new set of rules for developers that want to use its App Store.

The new rules require that every app has a link in its description that takes users to its privacy policy page. Until now, the requirement existed only for apps that have subscriptions, but once the new rules go into ...

Lenovo has a new Yoga Book: a two-screen tablet hybrid with E Ink

The Lenovo Yoga Book C930 does not quite feel like a mainstream device. It is instead a mixture of features and functionalities that a geek would dream up, a device that some tech enthusiast has conjured from the depths of their imagination...

It was two years ago at IFA 2016 when Lenovo introduced a one-of-kind tablet-laptop 2-in-1 device that grabbed the attention of visitors: the original Lenovo Yoga Book. And now, Lenovo is ready with the evolved successor: the Lenovo Yoga Book C930.

If you can get over the clunky name (C930? Come on, Lenovo!), the ...

Sharp's new European smartphone lineup is in bad need of a flagship

While our Western readers may not be very familiar with Sharp’s smartphone designs, the Japan-based TV and display specialist is actually the leader of its home market when it comes to Android devices.

A key iPhone panel supplier for many years now, the company was acquired by Foxconn back in 2016, and the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer wasted no time modernizing and expanding its subsidiary’s production facilities.

But Sharp also wants a piece of the global smartphone pie for itself, returning to Europe with a fresh trio of own-brand Android handsets. Unfortunately, ...
