California Governor Jerry Brown signs net neutrality into law; Trump administration sues

With a swipe of his pen, California Governor Jerry Brown made net neutrality the law in California. That means that ISPs and wireless carriers must treat all streams of content the same. For example, Netflix can't pay AT&T money to have its content sent through a "fast lane." In addition, no content can be banned just because it conflicts with the philosophical leanings of a wireless provider. California's law also adds something that the original net neutrality rules didn't have; it prevents content streamers from paying to have its music or video streamed with a zero-rating.

New York City's Wi-Fi kiosks have over 5 million users

Back in 2014, we told you about New York City's plans to get rid of 10,000 pay phones that were still dotting the Big Apple's landscape. The plan was to replace the pay phones with  Wi-Fi kiosks that would offer free Wi-Fi at speeds up to 1Gbps, and include charging stations and an Android tablet. And ads would be sold to help fund the project, eventually making it self-sufficient.

Nearly four years later, there are 1,700 kiosks in the five boroughs, and more than five million people are registered to access the free Wi-Fi connectivity, with 20 million Wi-Fi sessions ...

FBI forces suspect to unlock his Apple iPhone X using Face ID

According to Forbes, a recent investigation by the FBI resulted in the G-Men forcing a suspect to use Face ID to unlock an iPhone for the first time. It happened last month in Columbus, Ohio when the FBI called on 28 year old Grant Michalski at his home. Armed with a search warrant, the FBI forced Michalski to glance at his Apple iPhone X, unlocking the device.

Since Apple defied a federal judge back in 2016 by not unlocking the iPhone 5c belonging to San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook, locked iPhones have been opened by having suspects use their fingerprints to activate ...

On Friday, the Apple iPhone XS and Apple iPhone XS Max launched in Moscow at a local phone store. For several days before the launch, a few hundred Russians stood in line, getting soaked by rain and experiencing bone-chilling cold. Finally, the time came to open the doors and let the frenzied crowd in to buy the latest smartphones from Apple. But when the doors opened, most on line never entered the store.

Instead, it turns out that the queue was made up of professional place-holders, looking to sell their spots on line to the real Apple fans for a huge sum of money. ...

Smart speakers found in 24% of U.S. homes says new survey

The immediate future could be bright for smart speaker manufacturers following a report from Nielsen revealing that 24% of U.S. homes own a smart speaker (up from 22% in Q1). And 40% of those homes equipped with a smart speaker have multiple units inside. That leaves plenty of potential smart speaker buyers in the U.S., and will probably result in a strong holiday shopping season this year. Because smart speakers can be found priced as low as $25, they make an appropriately priced holiday gift.

Another positive stat for companies like Amazon, Google and Apple to consider, ...

The world's first 10GB of RAM phone may not be coming after all

The BlackBerry KEY2 features a physical QWERTY keyboard and the BlackBerry Evolve and Evolve Plus carry a near bezel-less display with an aspect ratio of 18:9.

The iPhone being targeted must be in the hands of the hacker for this attack to work.

The operation requires the use of the VoiceOver feature, which reads out loud what is appearing on an iPhone's screen. It also requires ...

Sideload the Pixel 3 Launcher on your Android phone running Oreo or Pie

If you own a handset running Android 8.0 or up, you can now sideload the new Pixel 3 Launcher on it. Now, we have to point out that even though the APK will work with the Google Feed, it doesn't play nice with the original Pixel Launcher. And ironically, that means that those with a Pixel or Pixel 2 cannot install the APK on their phone, unless it is rooted. Not that the Pixel 3 Launcher brings a huge change to the original. The only noticeable difference is the addition of a Google Assistant shortcut on the search bar at the bottom of the screen.

As we said, the Pixel ...

Android Pie is a no-show in latest distribution numbers; Oreo reaches new high

The latest Android distribution numbers have been published and, rather disappointingly, Android 9 Pie is still a no-show.

According to the latest data, Oreo now sits on a total of 19.2% of devices, this represents a considerable increase of 4.6 percentage points in just one month. Moreover, it is 3.4% higher than what Nougat achieved one year ago. Speaking of which, the 2016 version of Android takes the biggest slice of the Pie with a combined 29.3% which is actually a rather large decline over last month’s 30.8%.

Elsewhere, Marshmallow sits in second place with 21.6% and ...

New ad promotes larger screened Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max to owners of smaller models

Apple must believe that iPhone X users aren't planning to pick up one of the new 2018 iPhone models. As a result, it continues to promote the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and upcoming iPhone XR as its "big screens." But that doesn't work if you're upgrading from a 5.8-inch iPhone X to a 5.8-inch iPhone XS. So when it runs a commercial like the latest one, found at the top of this article, it really feels as though it is talking to those with a smaller screened Apple iPhone 7, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6. Not only are the screens on all three of these models just 4.7-inches, ...

In a bid to get regulators to approve the T-Mobile merger, Sprint puts down its own LTE network

T-Mobile and Sprint are awaiting regulatory approval for their $26.5 billion merger from the FCC and FTC. The FCC might have painted itself into a corner the other day by passing rules that force state and local governments to decide quickly whether or not to allow carriers to deploy 5G technology within their borders. The FCC says that this must be done to keep U.S. leadership of 5G technology. This is the same argument that T-Mobile and Sprint have made as to why their merger should be allowed to close.

However, when dealing with U.S. regulatory agencies, it is always ...

The main difference between the LG Stylo 4+ and the non-plus variant lies in the fact that the former is dust- and water-resistant, while the latter doesn't offer any kind of protection in this regard. Moreover, the Stylo 4+ has ...

Google Pixel 3 XL & Pixel 2 XL cases will not be interchangeable, images confirm

When it comes to both the overall dimensions and rear designs, yesterday’s hands-on video of the Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 3 XL confirmed that the devices were pretty similar. Despite these similarities, though, it seems Google has made a few tweaks that mean cases will not be interchangeable.

Looking at the rear fit, it’s fair to say that the Pixel 3 XL cases could theoretically still be used on the Pixel 2 XL – they don’t cover up any important features – but, due to slightly higher placement of the fingerprint scanner and the camera on the new model, the cut-outs don’t align perfectly, which ...

ITC Judge says Apple infringed on one Qualcomm patent, but he will not ban U.S. iPhone imports

A U.S. International Trade Commission judge ruled today that the Apple iPhone infringed on one of a trio of Qualcomm patents. But even with that in mind, Judge Thomas Pender said that banning U.S. imports of the iPhone would be against the public interest. That comment mirrors a statement made by ITC staff nearly two weeks ago. At that time, these staff members said that banning imports of the iPhone in the states would negatively impact competition in the modem chip market. Apple isn't completely off the hook as far as an import ban is concerned. The full commission must review Judge Pender's ...

According to analyst Rod Hall, though, this year’s deal could see the figure rise to a whopping $9 billion.

Reportedly, Apple is one of the biggest channels of traffic acquisition for Google – it accounts for roughly half of all mobile revenue – ...

According to WABetaInfo, who has a history of providing accurate information about upcoming WhatsApp features, the popular messaging platform is already working on bringing ads to the iOS version of its ...

That brings us to the Samsung Galaxy Tab E, a budget-friendly tablet that's been launched in the United States about two years ago. The Verizon variant, also know as SM-T378, has just been spotted at Wi-Fi Alliance, nothing really unusual if not for the fact that it runs Android 8.0 Oreo.
