Apple Watch easter egg celebrates the New Year

If 2018 has yet to start where you live, and you own the Apple Watch, make sure that you watch the screen of the timepiece when midnight hits. Apple has slipped in an easter egg in the form of animated fireworks. This is similar to the animated balloons that appear on the Apple Watch face when midnight brings the owner's birthday. These visual celebrations are new and were added to the Apple Watch when watchOS 4 was rolled out earlier in 2017.

It doesn't matter which watch face you are using on the Apple Watch, or which Apple Watch Series you own. As soon as the time reads 00:00, raise your ...

Samsung responds to battery issue on the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8+

Last week, we told you that some Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+ units were getting bricked after the batteries were drained completely to 0%. Once these phones shut down, they could not be resuscitated by any method. While horrible news for the owners of affected models, at least we aren't seeing these handsets blow up, which is what happened last year when the batteries inside the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 failed. That led the latter to get recalled twice and finally removed from store shelves. Samsung took a hit in excess of a billion dollars because of this debacle.

Would you like Apple to launch a gold iPhone X? (poll results)

Apple is currently selling the iPhone X in just two color variants (silver and space gray), but there have been plenty of rumors about a gold version of the handset.   Before Apple got to announce the iPhone X, well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that, due to unspecified production problems, the company might release a gold variant of the phone sometime after the silver and space grey models. Since then, we haven't seen any new info about this, so there's no way of telling if a gold iPhone X will ever be available to buy. But we were curious to know what you, our readers, thought ...

Also, since it's part of the Android One program, the smartphone should be among the first to receive a major Android OS update. Unfortunately, it took Xiaomi quite a long time to bring Oreo to the Mi A1.

Initially introduced in China in early September, the Mi A1 made its debut in select European ...

All the news that fits won't print as the New York Times closes its BlackBerry 10 app next month

BlackBerry and its faithful had high hopes for BlackBerry 10. After all, the company that developed the operating system, QNX, received high marks for its work on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. BlackBerry was so impressed that it bought the company and had it get right to work on its next-gen operating system for smartphones, later dubbed BlackBerry 10. While the gesture based OS shared some of its capabilities with webOS, and there were some who loved the software, the hardware was a let down for many.

Instead of offering top-shelf handsets to compete with Apple and Samsung, BlackBerry ...

Floridians face a full ban on texting while driving if legislature passes new bill

For now, Florida is one of seven states that requires those texting while driving to have committed another infraction before being charged with distracted driving. But that is about to change. The Florida state legislature will soon discuss the possibilities of pushing through a bill that will make texting while driving a primary offense. That means that the cops will be able to nail someone behind the wheel who is texting even if they aren't speeding, shifting lanes without flashing their signal, or driving a vehicle that doesn't have a license.

Alleged Huawei P20, P20 Plus, and P20 Pro designs leak out, triple cameras everywhere

In the last three years, Huawei released P8, P9, and P10 series of smartphones, so we're now expecting the company to introduce a P11 family. However, this might not happen. According to a few leaked images originating from China, Huawei's next generation P-series handsets should be called P20.   Said images show schematics that allegedly reveal the overall design of three new Huawei P20 smartphones - a regular P20, a P20 Plus, and a P20 Pro. Apparently, all three handsets will offer triple rear cameras (though positioned differently). According to a previous report, Huawei's upcoming triple ...

Apple starts offering its $29 battery replacements today, two days earlier than expected

A couple days ago, Apple apologized for throttling the CPU of certain iPhone models. Apple says that it did this so that the handsets' lack of prime battery power wouldn't shut them down when handling certain tasks. Along with the apology came a deal from the company. Since weak batteries are at the heart of the issue, Apple is allowing you to replace the cells on the iPhone 6 and up for $29. That is a $50 discount from the usual price of $79.

The deal was expected to start on January 1st 2018 and runs through the end of next year. An Apple spokesman said that it expected to need more time ...

However, it appears that an AT&T version of the LG G6+ that goes by model number H871U has just been spotted on LG's open source website. The bad news is we ...

Do we already know what a Surface Phone would look like?

At Build 2017, Microsoft’s annual developer conference, Microsoft was busy announcing a bunch of new, forward-thinking developments including new updates to Windows 10 and their cloud computing platform. Perhaps the most exciting underlying theme was that Microsoft wants to make better software that works really well between devices, and they did not only mean working well between Windows PCs, but between all your devices, iOS and Android included.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, envisions a future in which people own on average six devices. He knows that not all of these devices will ...

Would you like Apple to launch a gold iPhone X?

Earlier this year, before Apple officially announced the iPhone X, various rumors had it that the company would launch a gold version of the new handset. As you likely know, that didn't happen, so the iPhone X currently comes in only two color variants: silver and space gray. Meanwhile, both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (announced at the same time with the iPhone X) have gold versions, in addition to space gray and silver ones.   So why wouldn't the iPhone X come in gold, too? According to a previous report, well-informed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple had encountered unspecified ...

Amazon India teases new Samsung Galaxy On handset which could be a rebranded Galaxy J7 Pro

Amazon India has started teasing a new Samsung Galaxy On handset. Considering that the Galaxy On models have always been rebranded Galaxy J units, the question is which one of the latter models is getting turned on. Or should we say, turned into an On. Amazon's Indian website mentions the phone's "Superior Performance," and a "New Way To Shop." The latter could be hinting that the phone will be equipped with Samsung Pay or another mobile payment system. Since the Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro is the only model in the series with support for the complete Samsung Pay package, that could be the phone that ...

There's no doubt that HMD Global plans to launch more Nokia-branded smartphones next year, and one of them could be a sequel to the mid-range Nokia 6.

Qualcomm had the highest share of the smartphone SoC market during Q3 2017, followed by Apple

Just the other day, we mentioned how rough 2017 has been for chip designer Qualcomm. Thanks to a number of lawsuits filed by Apple against Qualcomm and vice versa, there is a good chance that Qualcomm will not be supplying CDMA iPhone units with a modem chip next year. That could be a role that MediaTek will play in 2018, with Intel supplying Apple with the component for GSM models.

As the year started to come to an end, Qualcomm received an unsolicited takeover bid from Broadcom. The latter is prepping a proxy battle and is seeking to replace Qualcomm's board. Even with all of these negatives ...

Deal: Perhaps your last chance to score an LTE-ready Wear24 smartwatch for just $80

Verizon didn't seem to like its own smartwatch, otherwise, we can't explain why the carrier discontinued the Wear24 four months after it went on sale. Initially launched for $350, the price for the Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch quickly dropped to unbelievable values.

In the last two months, several retailers sold the LTE-ready Wear24 for just $80, nearly 80% less than the original price. If you missed those deals, you have one more chance to score a good deal if you really want an Android Wear smartwatch.

Up on eBay, a retailer is selling the Wear24 for $79.97 ...

DIY battery replacement kits for iPhone 6 or later cut to $29 by iFixit

Yesterday, Apple apologized for throttling the CPU on models like the Apple iPhone 6 or later. After numerous models shutdown last year, unable to complete complex tasks, Apple deduced that the problem was the lack of power remaining in the older batteries inside these units. So iOS 10.2.1 was pushed out, designed to use power management (code for throttling) to slow down the CPU. This would prevent the affected iPhone from shutting down.

In its apology, which was posted on the Apple website, the company said that one of the steps it is taking to regain the trust of iPhone users ...

A new OnePlus 5T (sandstone version?) might be released next month

Yesterday, OnePlus posted a teaser video featuring people reacting to a mysterious product hidden inside a box. As you can see in the video - embedded above - most people seem to like the texture of the product, and some say it's reminiscent of the sandstone variants of the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2.   In case you didn't know, unlike OnePlus' newer smartphones, the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 did not have metal backs. On the sandstone versions of these two handsets, the back had the texture of real sandstone, with a grippy, distinct feel. So we're thinking that OnePlus may have been working ...

Best true wireless headphones of 2017

When it comes to the Bluetooth wireless headphones space, the greatest innovation we've seen lately has been the leap into the "true wireless" segment – headphones that are no longer tethered to one another. Now that the first-generation of true wireless headphones are behind us, 2017 welcomed several second-gen products that aimed specifically to grow the segment even more.

From the big names in the space like Apple and Samsung, to some of those startups ...
