Xfinity Mobile, owned by cable giant Comcast, has reported its first quarter earnings report. During the three month period ended in March, Xfinity Mobile lost $189 million, which is a sizeable chunk of change. At the same time, the company added 196,000 new subscribers. Comcast doesn't have to spend to build out a network, and sells its wireless service and phones from Xfinity stores already selling cable and internet. This might be a clue that Comcast is pricing Xfinity Mobile as a loss leader so that the company can push cable, internet and home phone service to its mobile subscribers.

With the news today that T-Mobile plans on merging with Sprint in a transaction valued at $26.5 billion, this could be the end of the road for the Sprint name. The merged company will be known as T-Mobile and will be run at the top by the latter's John Legere. T-Mobile parent Deutsche Bank will own 42% of the carrier, and Sprint parent SoftBank will control 27%. The public will own the remaining 31%. The deal, which still requires regulatory approval, will reduce the number of major U.S. wireless operators by 25%.

This coming Tuesday, May 1st, Apple will report the results of its fiscal second quarter which ended in March. According to images that were published today, it would appear that a couple of Chinese variants of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 have received certification in the country. The China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (CMIIT) gave the thumbs up to the Samsung SM-N9600 on March 21st of this year. Earlier this month, we showed you some renders allegedly revealing the look of the BlackBerry KEYone sequel codenamed "Athena." At first glance, this phone appears to be very similar to the current model. But a closer look reveals sharper squared-off corners on top, an extra textured button on the side, and a dual-camera setup on back. Today, the "Athena" was spotted on the site of China's telecommunications regulator TENAA. This is the agency, similar to the FCC in the states, that must approve all handsets used in the country.
