Samsung Bixby hands-on: What you can do with the new GS8 virtual assistant

Siri, Alexa, Cortana – even the unnamed voice behind the Google Assistant: you can't throw a stone in smartphone-software land without hitting some kind of voice-driven virtual assistant. While some developers would look at that spread and say “enough,” Samsung isn't content to let all the other big players in the mobile world have all the fun, and has put together a service of its own. With the launch of the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ this week, the manufacturer introduced users to the first hardware capable of tapping into this system, an assistant it calls Bixby. FCC auction of 600MHz spectrum finally comes to an end with $19.63 billion in winning bids

The FCC's auction of 600MHz spectrum has finally come to an end. In two weeks, the regulatory agency will announce the winning bidders for each block that was auctioned off. The low frequency airwaves travel farther and penetrate buildings better, which is why many carriers were interested in the auction. The spectrum came originally from television broadcasters. The FCC is giving these television and radio stations 39-months to complete the transition to new channels. The broadcasters are seeking additional time while the winning bidders are hoping to receive ownership of the airwaves as quickly ...

Remember how amazing you thought the Motorola RAZR flip phone was? Everyone had one, and those who didn't wanted one badly. You can fool that Galaxy! Video shows Galaxy S8's face recognition bypassed by photo

Although it likely won't end up the disaster of galactic proportions that was the fiery Galaxy Note 7, the new Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus already seem to be raising some concerns.

A new video popped up on the interwebs, showing a Galaxy S8 seemingly getting fooled by a high-res picture of the face it's supposed to scan in real-life. A person uses a Galaxy S8 to try and bypass the face recognition of another Galaxy S8, and after a few tries, he succeeds in unlocking the device and gets past the lock screen. Ouch!

As a reminder, Samsung introduced a new face recognition security ...

Huawei blames smartphones for its slowing profit growth

In a market which values growth over market share, even just the slowdown of a company's expansion can be somewhat bad news. Such is the case with Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications equipment and smartphone maker, whose recent successes in the mobile phone industry have apparently lowered the company's profit growth for 2016.

This analysis comes directly from Huawei, whose chief executive stated in a press conference that the company, as well as the industry as a whole, has faced financial troubles in the past year, a fact which can be attributed ...

Galaxy S8 and S8+ come with new Sony IMX333 and Samsung camera sensors

Remember those rumors sourced from the Chinese tech blogosphere that the Galaxy S8 may come with a new custom Sony camera sensor, tagged as IMX333. At the time, it seemed a bit improbable, given that this sensor is not in Sony's official Exmor lineup of mobile sensors, and that the camera was rumored to be the same as on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. Moreover, last year the 12 MP camera that found its way in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge uses two sensor models - either Samsung's own S5K2L1 ISOCELL unit, or a piece by Sony, marked as IMX260.

Will you be preordering the Galaxy S8, or the S8+? (poll results)

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ went up for preorder yesterday, and we asked you which one do you intend to get, or whether you are still on the fence. Surprisingly. most of those who intend to preorder, are gunning for the larger, 6.2" Galaxy S8+. Granted, its 83% screen-to-body ratio means that it is about the size of the Note 7, but it's still one pretty big handset. We'll see if that preference holds water after the first sales numbers, and whether it might present a challenge for Samsung, which is producing more Galaxy S8 than S8+ units for the initial batches. Unsurprisingly, the largest ...

EFF: Verizon's new AppFlash launcher is "The First Horseman of the Privacy Apocalypse"

Verizon has announced its newest addition to its ever-growing roster of custom default Android applications today: AppFlash, an app launcher and search utility built into Verizon's smartphones, which the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the US' largest digital privacy advocate, calls 'spyware'.

On March 28, the United States Congress voted to reduce broadband privacy protections in a move widely criticized by privacy activists, as it would let Internet providers sell users' data without their permission. This, according to EFF, is what prompted the ...

Which Galaxy S8 can bench more? Snapdragon 835 vs Exynos 8895 models get scored on AnTuTu

As is lately the case with almost every Samsung flagships, this year’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ variants will come in two separate versions – one for the US and China, running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, and one for the rest of the world, powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 8895. This comes as a result of Qualcomm’s firm grasp on CDMA-related patents, which all but guarantees their near-monopoly in the States, forcing companies like Samsung to release modified versions of their devices compatible with local bands. Ditto for the TD-SCDMA standard in China.

While the two chipsets have ...

Apple's iOS 10.3 update fixes the bug that overwhelmed the 911 system

The iPhone bug that overwhelmed the 911 system by repeatedly calling the emergency number over and over has apparently been fixed by Apple in its iOS 10.3 update, almost five months after being publicly exploited by an Arizona teen on Twitter.

The bug took advantage of an iOS feature which allowed users to immediately call a phone number by tapping on it. Apple's fix is simple: now, instead of placing a call right away, the phone explicitly prompts the user, requiring a second tap before calling.

The bug was most famously exploited last fall, when a Twitter ...

But as Mr. Voice Over announcer tells us, the battery on the iPad Pro stays charged all day making traveling a lot less painful.
